Why CaPABLE and Beyond?
The dictionary defines disability as:
a physical, mental, cognitive, or developmental condition that impairs, interferes with, or limits a person’s ability to engage in certain tasks or actions or participate in typical daily activities and interactions
an impairment (such as a chronic medical condition or injury) that prevents someone from engaging in gainful employment.
a disqualification, restriction, or disadvantage
a lack of legal qualification to do something
The CaPABLE…and Beyond blog was developed by LaunchPoint Resume founder, Lauren Hamer as a motivating resource for all things real life — whether it be career, personal, or disability-related.
What’s with the blog name, you ask?
I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (CP) at a very young age. And while my specific disability is mild in terms of the Cerebral Palsy spectrum, I’ve dealt with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows as a result. The invaluable lessons I’ve been forced to learn are some that most may never experience in a lifetime.
I am who I am because of my disability — someone strong, motivated, and CaPABLE.
I realized my inabilities produced CAPABILITIES that make up my unique VALUE and WORTH. A common theme in the disability world is that you ARE NOT your disability. But to that I say you most definitely are. How it defines you, however, is up to you.
We all have to start somewhere- a Launch Point specific to only ourselves. As you prepare for the take-off that sends you beyond your comfort zone, there are lessons you’ll want to take with you. Follow me on my journey, and forge your own path along the way.
